The focus is on cultural production in wartime conditions\u2014artistic practices, events, and encounters that emerged despite everyday violence, destruction, and isolation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"839\" data-end=\"1670\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">In the text <em data-start=\"851\" data-end=\"899\">\u201cMilomir Kova\u010devi\u0107 and the Siege of Sarajevo,\u201d<\/em> <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Semezdin Mehmedinovi\u0107<\/span><\/span> emphasizes that the siege of Sarajevo represented \u201ca different kind of warfare,\u201d in which the \u201cconstant suffering of nameless civilians\u201d became the dominant image of the city. In such circumstances, he notes, a strong need arose to preserve normality and human dignity, resulting in an intense cultural life: \u201cthe need of artists and writers to describe their reality through creation grew significantly already in the first year of the siege.\u201d Mehmedinovi\u0107 underlines that cultural activities played a crucial role in the city\u2019s survival and in shaping its international perception, while Kova\u010devi\u0107\u2019s photographic work remains a lasting record of that experience: \u201cthe entire history of the siege survives through his photographs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1672\" data-end=\"2740\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">A related perspective is offered by <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Ferida Durakovi\u0107<\/span><\/span> in her text <em data-start=\"1758\" data-end=\"1791\">\u201cCulture in Besieged Sarajevo,\u201d<\/em> where she highlights the dual nature of wartime experience: \u201cThere was war. It was terrible. And it was wonderful,\u201d pointing to the simultaneous presence of destruction and creative energy. Culture and art, in her words, became a means of resistance and a way of preserving humanity: \u201cDuring the war we created and showed the world our literary, musical, visual, film, theatre, and multimedia works so that we would not, anonymous and unrecognized, torn apart by shells or shot by snipers from the hills, end this one and only life on the streets of a besieged, strange city lying at the crossroads of four great religions of the world\u2014what a blessing and what a curse of fate!\u201d Durakovi\u0107 also recalls the intensity of Sarajevo\u2019s cultural life during the siege, noting that thousands of artistic events, performances, exhibitions, and books were produced under extremely modest conditions, as an expression of the need to survive and leave a trace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2742\" data-end=\"3109\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">The exhibition <em data-start=\"2757\" data-end=\"2797\">Culture in Wartime: Sarajevo 1992\u20131995<\/em> documents precisely this dimension of the siege through Milomir Kova\u010devi\u0107\u2019s lens\u2014the daily effort to sustain the continuity of cultural life and preserve the city\u2019s identity.
