Louise Bourgeois

(Paris, France, 1911 – New York, USA, 2010)

 

From 1936 to 1938, she studied at the École des Beaux – Arts in Paris and in Leger’s studio. In 1938, she moved to the USA. Her first solo exhibition was held in 1945, in Bertha Scaffer Gallery in New York. She taught at the Pratt Institute, School of Visual Arts and the University of New York. In 1949, she abandoned painting and started making sculptures. She published her works in the US art reviews and magazines. In 1977, she obtained the honorary doctorate of the Yale University, as well as other public recognitions. In 1982, she exhibited her works in the American pavilion at the Venice Biennale and the Documenta in Kassel.
