Schmutzer Ferdinand


Ferdinand Schmutzer

(Vienna, 1870 – Vienna, Austria, 1928)

Painter, photographer and an award-winning print maker. He studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. During his study visit to Netherlands, works of Rembrandt van Rijn sparked his interest in etching.

 

Schmutzer exhibited his work on the international scene and has won numerous awards and recognitions. He introduced new techniques and use of large formats, previously unknown in etching technology. He was a member of the Vienna Secession, in 1908 he was appointed professor at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, where he was the rector from 1922 to 1924.
