CALL TO ME, BALKANS is a collection of intimate photographic impressions from American documentary photographer and educator Bruce Strong, whose 2023 sabbatical and term as a visiting scholar with the VII Academy in Sarajevo launched him and his camera into the rich, diverse and long-interconnected Balkan cultures of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia and Slovenia. With an emphasis on Sarajevo and timed to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the end of the Bosnian War, this exhibit is the result of Strong’s search for an updated understanding of a place where resilience and grace thrive against a complex historical backdrop of conflict and reconciliation.

BRUCE STRONG is an award-winning photographer, video storyteller and professor at Syracuse University in New York state, where he also serves as The Alexia endowed chair, presiding over its international photography/film grants and other projects. Inspired by a desire to bridge cultural divides and focus on our shared humanity, he has traveled to more than 80 countries as a staff and independent photographer in pursuit of creating work that informs, inspires and creates meaningful connection.
