Baltazar Baumgartl (Fekete-Lehota, Rožňava District, Slovakia, 1867 – Sarajevo, BiH, 1922) studied painting at the Art Teachers’ College in Budapest (1888 – 1891) and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich (1891 – 1892). He worked as a drawing professor in Sarajevo since 1899.
He was close to the members of Sarajevo Painters Club (Sarajevoer Maler Club) and enjoyed the great respect of the young generation of Sarajevo painters. And yet for a long time he remained unknown to the Bosnian-Herzegovinian audience – Baumgartl’s works were first introduced at the exhibition “Acquisition from 1973” in the National Gallery of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1974.
