Antoni Tapies
(Barcelona, Spain, 1923)
He started painting without any prior formal education. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts only for two months. In 1948, he co-founded the artistic group “Dau al Set” that was linked to the Surrealists and Dadaists. In 1953, he began working with a combined technique, which is considered his most original contribution to modern art. He exhibited his works at the Documenta in Kassel (1959, 1964, 1968, 1972 and 1977). He won the Golden Medal and was granted an honorary doctorate by the Royal College of Art in London.
