Maximilian Liebenwein

(1869. Vienna, Austria – 1926. Munich, Germany)

Austrian painter, print maker and book illustrator. He studied at the academies in Vienna, Karlsruhe and Munich. As a an artist he lived in Vienna and Munich. Since 1899, he settled in one of the towers of the medieval castle Burghausen / Salzach, which he turned into his working and living space. He was a member of the Vienna Secession and the Association of Artists of Germany. His favorite motifs were fairy tales and folk tales, animals (especially cats), knights and saints. He was a characteristic representative of Jugendstil.

He was the illustrator of the magazine “Nada” from its founding in 1895 until its closure in 1903. Together with Čeplin, Leo Arndt and Ivana Kobilca, he founded the Sarajevo Painting Club (Sarajevoer Maler Club). He visited Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1900 and 1901. Excerpts from his diary created during this trip, together with illustrations, were published in “Nada” in 1902.
