Alternative classroom
Workshops for children include a guided tour of the exhibition (customized to the age group), discussion about the exhibited artworks (by using a museum-educational strategy of visual thinking) and creative practical work.
The goal of the Alternative classroom is to help children develop a deep understanding of art while being surrounded by original artworks. The museum space and its unique purpose, appearance and ritualistic feeling that it possesses, creates a special atmosphere for active learning and gaining knowledge outside the school classroom.
In the Alternative classroom children will experience learning as a playful game.
The National Gallery of B&H aspires to present the public with the importance and value of art, as well as promoting the knowledge about techniques and colors. The goal is for participants to gain visual literacy, expand their vocabulary and critical thinking. Every direct experience and contact with artworks brings a different quality and cognition to the onlooker. Many pedagogical studies confirm that children learn better in a active environment, by having a direct contact with artworks, in comparison with a simple transmission of information and facts. The program of the Alternative classroom is designed to promote independent exploration of artworks, looking at the works from different perspectives and exploring the relations between forms and shapes within the artwork itself. The educational program is followed by the creative-manual work of participants, inspired by the visual sensations of the exhibition experience.
