Tambura Tradition in Pljevlja
The exhibition “Tambura Tradition in Pljevlja” presents a valuable documentary and research project dedicated to preserving the musical heritage of northern Montenegro.
Through a rich body of archival material – including photographs, documents, posters, sheet music, and accompanying texts – the exhibition offers an overview of the decades-long continuity of tambura music-making in Pljevlja, one of the important centres of this tradition in the Balkans, tracing its development from the earliest organized ensembles to the contemporary activity of tambura orchestras.
Special emphasis is placed on the tambura as an instrument that has shaped the cultural and social life of the town, connecting generations and occupying an important place in festive, public, and family gatherings. The exhibition, however, is not only about music, but also about people – enthusiasts, musicians, and cultural workers whose engagement has been crucial in preserving and developing this tradition.
The author of the exhibition is Emir Prekić, a long-standing cultural worker and researcher, as well as the founder and artistic director of the Pljevlja City Tambura Orchestra. His continuous work in documenting and promoting tambura music represents an important contribution to the preservation of intangible cultural heritage.
The exhibition has been realized in cooperation with the Public Institution Centre for the Preservation and Development of Minority Cultures of Montenegro, an institution that has been dedicated for more than a decade to the affirmation of minority cultures, intercultural dialogue, and shared cultural values.
The exhibition will open on 24 March at 7:00 PM and will remain on view until 1 April.
