In the spirit of the most beautiful Bosnian customs, we present our neighbours, for their grand jubilee – 140 years of existence, with an exhibition of works by their students and teachers, which are also the artists from our collection.
Boris Orenčuk (Mostar, 1989) will present the series of sculptures through which he explored the possibilities of material in the construction of a predetermined shape – dominantly vertical human figure. Sculptures made of wire (produced by burning the tires) and wood fill up the space in groups, leaving a strong impression on visitors.
Izložba Berninijeva škola i rimski barok predstavlja čitav spektar slikarskih žanrova i stilova koji su definisali estetiku baroka, formirajući komunikacioni aparat Katoličke crkve, kako moralni tako i duhovni. Pored alegorijskog i mitološkog slikarstva ova izložba nudi amblematske primjere različitih žanrova, omiljenih naručiocima umjetnina tog doba, uključujući portret (i autoportret), pejzaž i nacrte za velike dekorativne freske namijenjene duhovnom uzdizanju vjernika.
Iva Despić Simonović was born in Hrastovica near Petrinja in 1891. Upon completion of primary and junior high school, Iva, who always showed affinity towards artistic expression, is enrolled in the Crafts Course for Girls at the Crafts School in Zagreb, and when the Course was discontinued in 1908, she enrolled in the College of Arts and Crafts.
Iva Despić Simonović was the first female sculptor in Bosnia and Herzegovina, a woman who was successful both as an artist and as a mother during the time when women were given different roles. Her sculptures testify of her extraordinary talent and skills, and her personality – real, dedicated, gentle and graceful.
Bosnian-Herzegovinian public is familiar with Thomas Steyaert as a dancer and choreographer. This exhibition will present him as a painter. His mixed-media work is a playful reflection on power structures and pain caused by violent political and economical systems. The distorted and cartoonish characters in Steyaert’s paintings often represent the obscene behavior of egocentric capitalist figures with a minimum on empathic understanding. The abstract works evolved from a pure fascination with texture, color and different printing techniques. The pieces seen at the exhibition were created with a self-thought technique by using oil paint, acrylic and spray paint on insulating foam boards.
The National Gallery of BiH has the honor and unique opportunity to organize, in cooperation with the Serbian Cultural and Educational Society “Prosvjeta” Sarajevo, another large retrospective exhibition of Branko Šotra’s works, after almost thirty years from the last one. This artist was primarily represented in the Yugoslav art history as a graphic artist, especially with the opus created during the last fifteen years of his life (1945-1960), so his paintings did not receive sufficient expert recognition. His works in the field of woodcarving, iconography and wall painting are even less known.
Aware of the educational potential of the art collections and the changing needs of society, in the past six months the National Gallery of Bosnia and Herzegovina carried out first museum outreach program in Bosnia and Herzegovina for school children with autism spectrum disorder. This program is a result of systematic educational-museum work with children, experience and gained knowledge of the museum pedagogy. The program was financially supported by Open Society Fund Bosnia and Herzegovina.
