Figure Study for Poster of  The Arts Association in Zürich (1897)

This is one of several original posters made by F. Hodler for the Artists’ Association in Zürich. This example illustrates the characteristics of Secession, primarily expressed through unpredictable, asymmetric and exceptionally decorative movement of lines that is in a particular manner a stylisation of form, with intentional deformations, emphasized flatness, and, ultimately, done in his specific colouristic accents. All these features of Hodler’s work should not come as surprise, since he is one of the most important representatives of Secession art genre. The Art Gallery of B&H possesses about two hundredth works of this particular artist.
